{"id":5132,"date":"2023-10-25T20:29:54","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T03:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssfairness.org\/?p=5132"},"modified":"2023-10-25T20:29:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T03:29:55","slug":"alert-tell-them-this-week-its-time-for-a-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ssfairness.org\/alert-tell-them-this-week-its-time-for-a-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Alert: Tell Them This Week\u2013It\u2019s Time for a Hearing!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Please call your Representative and Demand a Ways and Means Committee Hearing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the fact that there are now 298 co-signers on H.R.82, the bill to fully repeal the WEP and GPO, and there were even more co-signers in the last Congress, <strong>there has never been a full hearing on the offsets and how they work<\/strong>.&nbsp;Many legislators are still in the dark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to back up our Congressional co-sponsors, <a href=\"https:\/\/garretgraves.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garret Graves<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/spanberger.house.gov\/contact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abigail Spanberger<\/a> by telling our own Members of Congress to <strong>demand a full hearing<\/strong> on the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Find their websites at <a href=\"http:\/\/house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house.gov <\/a>and email or call their offices by Friday.<\/strong> (We hope you already have their phone numbers, local and D.C., in your address book.) Call them this week!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whether your representative has signed on or not, give them a couple of reasons to demand a real hearing to answer some questions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Why does the <strong>GPO ignore the years a spouse may be totally dependent<\/strong> and earning benefits before going to work and earning a public pension?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do some people say that <strong>the WEP formula was written incorrectly?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why do public pensions cause the offsets when <strong>other forms of income are not affected?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can Social Security justify cutting people\u2019s benefits when they retire <strong>without informing them beforehand?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do they defend the fact that the offsets cause a greater hardship on lower-income people than for those who have larger pensions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add your own questions!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are questions to be answered.&nbsp; Ask your legislator, co-signer or not, to request a hearing!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please call your Representative and Demand a Ways and Means Committee Hearing.
