National WEP/GPO Repeal Task Force CALL TO ACTION WEEK
Dates: February 5-9, 2024
Focus: Ask Ways & Means Committee Members to Request a “Mark-Up” Sessionfor H.R. 82
Wednesday, February 7, 2024

We hope this message finds you well. We are excited to announce this National WEP/GPO Repeal Task Force CALL TO ACTION WEEK, scheduled from February 5th-9th, 2024. We extend this invitation to your esteemed organization, which played a crucial role in our collaborative efforts last September.

This initiative aims to amplify our collective voice and advocate for the passage of H.R. 82, a crucial legislative measure that addresses the unfair penalization of public service workers on earned Social Security benefits. As we join forces again, members of the Ways and Means Committee must hear directly from us, the stakeholders who understand the impact and urgency of this issue.

Our strength lies in numbers, and the more voices that resonate during this CALL TO ACTION WEEK, the more significant the impact we can make. By participating, your organization contributes significantly to our shared goal of achieving justice for public service workers affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).

Here are some key points to emphasize during the CALL TO ACTION WEEK.

1. Importance of H.R. 82: Underscore the significance of H.R. 82 in rectifying the unjust penalties imposed on public service workers and the positive impact it will have on their earned Social Security funds.

2. Collaborative Advocacy: Highlight the success of our collaborative efforts last September and stress the importance of maintaining a united front to garner attention and support from the Ways and Means Committee members.

3. Engagement Strategies: Encourage creative and effective engagement during the CALL TO ACTION WEEK. Use the attached daily alerts and social media file to contact WAYS & MEANS Committee members.

We appreciate your ongoing commitment to this cause and look forward to your active participation during the National WEP/GPO Repeal Task Force CALL TO ACTION WEEK. Together, we can make a difference and bring about positive change for public service workers.

Thank you for your dedication and support.

Subject Header: Call for a “mark-up” session—Repeal the WEP & GPO through a favorable “mark-up” of H.R. 82.

Dear Representative,

On November 20, 2023, a successful field hearing (https://bit.ly/3U2J6Ua) was held for the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). We saw immense and enthusiastic support from legislators and witnesses for repealing these Social Security penalties.

Coupled with the momentous hearing, H.R. 82, the bill to repeal the WEP and GPO, has overwhelming bipartisan support represented by 304 cosponsors.

Please bring this decades-old injustice to a close by requesting a “mark-up” session for the bill to assist in getting the repeal to a favorable conclusion.

The notion that repealing the WEP and GPO would negatively impact the solvency of the Social Security trust funds is unfounded. For nearly 50 years, the Social Security Administration has used our earned benefits to bolster the funds and maintain its solvency. The only way to rectify this unfair situation is to repeal the WEP and GPO through federal legislation.

I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your help in repealing the penalties in the 118th Congress.

Thank you,
